Hi, I'm Ross, Curry Puff King, I would have taken the title King of Curry Puffs but I would be imposing on that title, which belongs to an Indian curry puff shop in Onan Road. My wife, Sherri, and I have been scouring the island for the last 10+ years trying to find the best curry puff in Singapore. It all started in 2012 or so with a curry puff tasting with eight puffs from around the island (the winner was Tambuah Mas in Tanglin Shopping Centre, the loser Polar, OCK in the middle). We've talked to taxi/Grab drivers, waiters, our friends and many other people we encounter in everyday life. We've been to about 90 different purveyors and are still searching for the ultimate curry puff experience. In the last three months alone we've been introduced to several new puffs. On one occasion a few years ago that I'm trying to block out, we ate seven curry puffs in two or three hours (yes we still ate dinner that night, no it wasn't curry puffs!).
My plan with this blog (I'm a neophyte blogger, please bear with me!) is to introduce the world to the best curry puffs in Singapore. I have styles that I prefer but try not to take an uppity attitude towards those I don't like. In those 10 or so years we've been taking weekly trips to different shops followed by an urban hike. My friend says we know Singapore better than most Singaporeans (geography wise). If you don't believe me, have you ever been to Tuas? Don't go for the curry puff! About eight years ago I started ranking the puffs on a five point scale, with five being superb and one sucky. My highest ranking is 4.5, my lowest in the 2's.
Each week I will try to introduce a curry puff that we have tasted in the past and then recently retasted. The original score and the new score will be shown (my tastes may be changing, or I'm getting more critical). I rank each puff on three criteria: crust, heat and spiciness (flavour, not heat). And then I just make up a score! I will also include shops we never tasted until this year.
I have seen the Straits Times tasting, I even conversed with one of the participants, and I've also seen many of the blog postings (I search them out). If you know of an out of the way shop or an unusual one, please let me know where it is. We've missed many shops in our travels because they closed either completely or for refurbishment, or they were done by the time we arrived (usually mid-afternoon). I've tried to find the uncles and aunties who sell them out of a pail or from the back of a bicycle but was always too late.
Sit back, read the blog and have a curry puff!
Cheers!
